Coolidge Wall - A Legal Professional Association

Public Sector Labor Law

The attorneys at Coolidge Wall serve many local governments both general counsel and special counsel for specific legal issues. The Labor and Employment department assists public sector clients with the specific legal issues peculiar to public sector employees. Our attorneys have significant experience with the special rules for compensating public employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act, such as the use of compensatory time off and dealing with the unusual schedules of police and fire employees. They also assist public sector clients to handle the constitutional issues unique to the public sector, such as the interplay between the Fourth Amendment and mandatory drug testing and employee due process rights during the investigation of misconduct and terminations. In addition, the Labor and Employment department places special emphasis on public sector collective bargaining and the rights and responsibilities of governments with respect to their unionized employees.
