Wilberding Establishes Endowed Prize for Law Review at University of Dayton

Merle Wilberding, long-time Coolidge Wall attorney, has established an endowment to create the Susan Newhart Elliott Award for Excellence in Legal Scholarship fund to recruit legal scholars to write for the University of Dayton Law Review. Wilberding also established a trust last year to support the law review in perpetuity.

“These gifts honor Susan’s longstanding service and contributions to legal scholarship, and the law review, for which I have a great deal of respect and admiration and is close to my heart,” said Wilberding who wrote the law review’s first article, “Banks and the Equal Pay Act, 1 U. Dayton Law Review 1 (1976).

Susan Newhart Elliott, a professor at the School of Law and director of the Zimmerman Law Library, has served at the UD School of Law since 1994, including 10 years in the law library and 10 years as the University of Dayton Law Review faculty adviser. She was also the law review’s Managing Editor as a member of the class of 1987.

As a student at Notre Dame Law School, Wilberding served as Executive Editor for its law review as a member of the class of 1969. Over the years Wilberding has written more than fifteen law review articles, as well as seven books, and more than fifty free lance and Op Ed pieces. He is a regular Community Contributor to the Dayton Daily News.
